Stuck... and trying to get unstuck

I set up an account here with many good intentions and I've avoided writing since then. I still wonder who is going to care about my posts; I still worry they will not be interesting, even this early in the process. These are barriers in my own mind and I know it. I work with physically disabled high school students and we are always encouraging them to break down the barriers in their minds that lead them to think they will not be accepted among their able-bodied peers. Why can't I take my own advice of a sort in this case? I guess I am though, because at least I'm trying by posting this.

I'm also trying to get unstuck by setting goals this year, sort of a natural thing to do in the first weeks of a new year. One of my goals is to be more organized with my paperwork (whatever happened to the paperless society that was supposedly on the horizon a few years ago?), and I'm making good progress with that. I also want to get in better shape. How do the extra pounds sneak up on you in your thirties, and now, dare I say, forties?... I turned 40 in December. My weight isn't horrible, but I don't really want to look like a middle-aged person; you probably know that sort of middle-aged look I mean.

Anyway, exercise is a challenge for me since I have cerebral palsy and my coordination, energy and endurance are not the best. I am ambulatory though and I found a few "Walk Away the Pounds" DVD's by Leslie Sansone that seem workable. I've gone through them a couple of times and I can't do every exercise, but I'm working on modifying the most involved ones. My biggest problem is getting motivated to do the workouts. I live with my cat, Spencer, and he isn't the best motivator. He is in fact the epitome of the lazy, aging tomcat. :-) After a long day at work I can't help but want to follow his example much of the time, or there are other tasks that fill my time, some necessary and some, well, not.

If anyone has any advice for getting motivated, I'd sure appreciate it. I'd love to be able to go to my physical exam in March having lost a few pounds.

  1. Hi Julie!

It's good to see you posting, I think it's a great step towards getting unstuck! I can certainly relate to the "middle-aged" look, and in fact I'm still wondering when I became middle-aged, ugh.

I love the Leslie Sansone videos, they have been the best source of exercise for me. I hope you have the same success with them! :)

  2. Thanks so much for the encouragement, Julie!! I'll let you know how I'm doing with the exercises. Wanting to keep you updated on my progress may just be enough to get me motivated. Here's hoping.
