E and F: A Tale of Two Frogs

E... (It's Not) Easy Bein' Green...

It's probably a bit of a stretch for E, but it's what popped in my head...

I was raised on Sesame Street. In fact, I loved it so much my lament in preschool was, "I want my mommy, I want a Twinkie, I want to go home and watch Sessy Street" (as I called it). It's probably safe to say that after a while, my teacher was more than tired of hearing about "Sessy" Street. Truly though, Jim Henson & Co. became an institution with Sesame Street and the other programs/movies of his creation.

I'm not sure I had a favorite SS character at the time, but Kermit was certainly a stand out and has since found a very special place in my heart. It's Not Easy Bein' Green is one of the first numbers I remember from SS, and it stands to reason, as it was one of the earliest pieces presented on the show. I appreciated it then as a child watching a Muppet sing a song. Now I see it as so much more. Sesame Street reached far beyond teaching letters, reading and numbers. The genius of Jim Henson lies in the fact that he understood so many universal truths of the human condition: that we all desire to belong, to be noticed, understood, loved and valued for who we are; that we are all different and special in our own ways, and we can make a mark on the world; that times may often be difficult, but they can and do get better, to name just a few.

It is a tragedy that we lost Jim Henson before his time, but his legacy lives on, and I will be forever grateful to have had him influence my life. For old times' sake, here is  It's Not Easy Bein' Green:

F... Frogger...

Atari 2600 was one of the earliest video gaming systems. If you grew up in the 1980's, chances are playing Atari filled your time. It was played with cartridges similar to 8-track tapes and joystick controllers with one button, as I remember it. By today's standards, the graphics were pretty abysmal, but I've tried today's gaming systems and to me the graphics almost overpower the games.

Frogger was one of my favorite Atari games, and I understand there's a modern version of it for today's systems. The object is simple: get your frog through lanes of traffic and across water safely to earn points. The traffic speeds up with each level; you have to jump on logs, alligator backs and lily pads to navigate the water, and the speed increases there, too. Like I said, simple, but so fun. I found a clip on You Tube that I'll post here. It goes on for quite a while, but it gives a great demonstration of the game, and it sure brings back memories. I lost my Atari when a pipe burst in our basement years ago. I hadn't played it in a long time, but even now, I wish I  could hook it up and give it a shot, see if I've still got what it takes to "beat the machine".
